Trailer for Beyond The Black Rainbow (2010), dir. by Panos Cosmatos
I’ve seen a couple of reviews for it here and there -it is the director’s debut, a mini-budget project out of Canada. Opinions on it are mixed and often centered around the eye-rollingly typical assertion that any indie montage film operating without a plot is some kind of “glorified art school project”.
In this case, because the trailer is so haunting, I’ll reserve judgment ‘til I can see it myself.
“FIFFLA’s goal is to bridge Philippine Cinema, Filipino-American filmmakers, actors, writers, and directors directly with Hollywood. We feel it’s a great time to show our talent and culture on a broader stage through film. We have a great opportunity at the moment with location and the diverse films we are receiving from Filipino filmmakers from the Philippines and US. We hope to showcase these films within our own community and specifically to the American general public to raise awareness for the Filipino films and the Filipino talent behind it.
Unfortunately, this year we are having problems raising funds. We are less than four weeks away from opening night of FIFFLA 2010 and at this point still not have raised the amount of money needed to run this film festival properly. We have already cut the budget to its minimum to run the film festival and to lower costs we’re also thinking of cutting down a day and minimizing show times to make this festival work.
We are a non-profit organization and every single one of our staff are on voluntary basis and do not get paid for any services rendered. We are all working on this project solely out of our own time because of passion and pride for our heritage and culture.
We are looking quickly raise money needed to make FIFFLA 2010 a success. Without these funds, I fear that it is impossible to run FIFFLA respectfully and gracefully in a way that it should done with the films that represents our country, culture, people and heritage to its fullest.” — FIFFLA - Filipino International Film Festival Los Angeles

I’m all for supporting Philippine cinema, but honestly, I don’t see the point of showcasing good Filipino films outside of the country when currently the only thing the majority of the population recognise as ‘Philippine cinema’ is either one of those sappy romances or those ridiculous horrors. The local movie scene needs to change before they go running off to America and ‘showcasing’ our movies there. In my humble opinion..
That’s like saying that a student filmmaker shouldn’t showcase their new, strong work because of the work they showed last year in class. Makes absolutely no sense to me.
IMO, showcase the “good” (whatever that means) films overseas to change the widespread public’s opinion of whatever they originally thought of Philippine cinema, and to inspire Philippine cinema as a whole to grow.
With film, nothing is insular - the masses ultimately decide the changes that will be made to any aspect of the industry because, really, that’s where the money comes from. I think this is a very important move for Filipino films, and I’m all for the FIFFLA; I hope they meet their budget in time!
