As far as Noé’s work, I’ve only seen Enter The Void, but I’ve heard a bit about Irreversible… I dunno if I want to see it. Can’t deal with “brutal rape”/rape-revenge plotlines. Enter The Void blew my mind with beauty and interesting writing, though I found it to be a little more tedious than I was in the mood for.
Park Chan-wook’s work is similar to Enter The Void, to me, when it comes to romanticizing trauma. I like his over-the-top melodrama, though, for some reason. It doesn’t try to “expose” aspects of “reality” or try to be “gritty” - it’s flashy and completely fantastical. I’m still trying to work through whether or not I find his films misogynistic or fetishizing violence towards women. On one hand, we have a bulk of his films which feature conniving or downright evil mothers and shrewish, two-faced young women as plot devices, and on the other hand we have Lady Vengeance (which contains roughly the same sorts of vile women, but with a female as the protagonist). Lady Vengeance was cathartic for me and made me cry. I’ll probably have to watch the movies again to refresh my memory, though.
Girl With The Dragon Tattoo fell a little flat for me, too, especially the ending. I’m curious about Fincher’s remake, though the accents and Mara’s styling seem a bit over-the-top.
