Ebert's advance review of Paradise Lost 3:... →
Paradise Lost changed my life a little when I watched it in high school. What does it really mean, to be judged by our peers? And what if one’s life is on the line? How are we okay with our government ordering individuals’ deaths, often on impatient whims, often without evidence? After almost 18 years, the West Memphis 3 were released from prison in August of 2011, but are still not...

Crew Call for Chicago
My AD/Producer friend, who I’ve worked under for several commercial and independent productions, has a Gaffer friend who’s looking for a fledgling/student PA with some grip experience for a 4-day shoot. No pay, but this project would be a great addition to a young resume, and of course there will be food. If you’re in the Chicagoland area and are interested, or know of someone...

davidmanque asked: If at all possible, try to hold off on buying hard drives for at least a few months - the flooding in Thailand has decimated many of the factories that make HDs, and the result is highly inflated prices right now (up to 3x!) and very few good deals. If you have to buy some externals right now - make sure they're 7200rpm, and try to get some with USB 3.0. Western Digital, Seagate, and...

Oh! I forgot to tell you guys-
I worked the Chicago Film Critics Awards this past weekend. Among my varied tasks were stuffing playbills, greeting everyone, aiding the box office in ticket location and distribution, stuffing my face with very non-vegan mini-burgers, running talent to and from the green room, finding stuff and things, escorting Dennis Farina to a press conference, shaking hands with James Earl Jones, getting...

ISO External Hard Drives
Video editing and techie friends: I need help findings some new externals. Two 2TBs strictly for backing up files (including HD video), and one 1-2TB for HD video editing. They’ll be kept on a desk, so portability isn’t necessary, though reliable casing and internal stability are always a plus. Enterprise-level also not necessary, as I’m running off a MacBook. Must be reliable...

mythoftheheart asked: Why would you give a commentary about rape scenes in regards to a question about Irreversible when you haven't even seen it? This especially annoys me since the whole point of Irreversible is to be the antithesis to just the type of films you are criticizing. It is set chronologically backwards as a commentary on how rape should not be a payoff, and is possibly just the type of film...

iscaro asked: My biggest criticism of Noe is probably his (treatment of) female characters in general... I could do without Irreversible all together to be honest and the only thing that is so amazing about enter the void is the visuals and cinematography.

Hung out with Dead and Immortal this evening, talked about film and feminism and life things. Great success! Next time he’s in town, let’s have one of those tumblr meetup things with local film bloggers. Maybe even time it up with a screening? Shout-out to the gals of feministfilm, IRL pals of D&I, who are def invited to Chicago to party any time.

Only 10 days left! Gitcher SUNS incentives while... →
SUNS still needs $2,700 to meet their goal - if you haven’t checked these fellas out, please do so. Not only are they really fun guys, they’re super-talented musicians (one guitarist in particular is pretty darn dreamy) with remarkable work ethic. You don’t need to give ‘em your money if you don’t have any, but please please please spread the word. I really wanna see...

Company’s doing overtime, I’m always working on two projects at once, considering an offer for a producer position on a reality show coming to Chicago, I still haven’t finished my Halloween costume and I’m leaving for New Orleans the day after tomorrow, started a sound thingy I really care about but had to put it down for a day and now I have no idea how to pick it up...

I hated Wristcutters: A Love Story
I found it boring, meandering and contrived, and absolutely loathed every single character. I don’t even care if Tom Waits is in it for like 10 minutes - it’s a story about whiny white kids who kill themselves to totally piss off their parents and end up in this ironic limbo-zone where they can go on road trips and fall in love with eachother. Barf. Not sorry.

roboticdinos asked: Hey there! Saw your ending comment on your Inferno posting. I actually graduated undergrad with a cinema studies degree and I'm looking into grad schools in Chicago (p.s. I live in Chicago). But it's so hard to find out what I want to do with a masters in screen cultures. Other than write books about what I love all day, which I'm not opposed to. Any way, so nice to see a fellow...

onesentencefilmreviews asked: Love your commentary on the Bechdel Test. Recently introduced it to my family, and they're constantly shocked at how few films meet the simple criteria. I still like the Test, because of it's simplistic nature, it really shows how inherently sexist Hollywood is. Though, I do believe an Advanced Bechdel Test would be nice. For example, watching Dodgeball today (which I have reviewed!) I...

Reblogging myself again because I still find this to be true, and a very valid argument. filmme-fatale: (a response): filmme-fatale: It’s about time we held female characters to a higher standard and argue against the Bechdel Test as still setting the bar (because, tragically, it is!). Hollywood will continue to sneer at feminist filmgoers and say films like Twilight are worth a watch...
